This album meant the world to me, mainly because it meant that I got to watch "the band that saved my life" live for the first time. Of course, by this time I already had numerous My Chemical Romance t-shirts, as well as a lot of other useless merchandise, including an MCR pillow and most importantly, a Black Parade jacket. This uniform is probably the most recognizable of all the band's "looks" over time and an obvious shout out to those worn by The Beatles on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club album cover. US rock star Gerard Way previously fronted the popular American rock band My Chemical Romance, whose darker anthems found favour with emo fans. However, recent solo debut Hesitant Alien saw him significantly change tack, a shorter haircut reflecting his new songs’ mix of David Bowie, Suede and Britpop. So, something that I should probably own up to from now - this is actually only part one of two articles discussing Gerard’s style evolution.

The My Chemical Romance singer decided having his hair styled into a long bright red streak was the best way to rebel against what was expected of him as a musician over 30 years old. “Dangerous” was a word used to describe them here, in part because they were so avante-garde, and in part because they’d only just started to see real mainstream success with their second studio album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. It’s a classic among the genre, and its cover is even graced by some of Gerard’s artwork. Stylistically, though, there’s a look that Gerard donned near the end of the touring cycle for the record that I think is worth checking out. As Martin explained on Instagram, he starts by using a color extractor to remove any remaining artificial color. Then, leaving the gray roots intact, he bleaches the rest of the head to prep hair for the new silver color. The band’s first record, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, has perhaps one of the angstiest album titles of all time.

It’s also a raw display of five dudes that knew they were gonna be a big freaking deal, and simply didn’t have the resources to show that off yet. It’s a rough record, full of stuff not being in key, including Gerard’s voice a handful of times, and really garbage mixing, and yet there’s a certain charm about it that’s unavoidable. Everybody has that one celebrity crush who overtakes every aspect of their being from ages 12 to 16 (16 being the age when you [should] realize that there's a reason you never see adult emos), and mine (like most people's in the 2000s) was Gerard Way. The man, the icon, the legend who has only been pipped for the post of "favorite man to ever exist in my heart" by David Bowie. Not only did My Chemical Romance fuel every aspect of my emo personality and never-ending need for music that screamed at my angst along with me, but Gerard's specific style through each album and era was and is iconic.
Somewhere in the move from elementary school to high school, I completely forgot about My Chemical Romance — until a year later, anyway. When I started dating the only goth in my year, I had to learn hurriedly about the music that came with black lipstick and a dog collar. Obviously, as a proud member of the MTV generation, there is no way that "Helena" was the first music video that I ever saw, but it is the first that I properly remember.
In another shot from this same shoot, you can see Gerard wearing a simple pair of black Converse Chuck Taylors, which is a look I have always been partial to myself, but I know plenty of people hate. It’s the kind of look that says “I tried, but this just so isn’t me,” and not only do I enjoy it aesthetically, but I relate to it in a big way. No recommendations for how to get this look, since I’m sure you could throw it together with what’s already in your wardrobe, but the next time you feel like overdressing when going out, maybe tone it back a bit like Gerard. Each of the band’s members is individually one of the most creative guys in whatever room they’re in, and that is hardly more true than when taking a look at their frontman, Gerard Way. Gerard and I have a few things in common, not the least of which is that we both love comics and come from New Jersey. But the thing that really drew me to Gerard was his style, and the way he carried himself.

He’s not yet penned anything as thrillingly menacing as his closing cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s Snakedriver, although snappy, arty, swaggering anthems such as Brother and No Shows get arms swaying like a 70s glam rock gig. “My brain arguing with me over whether I should grow my hair, cut it, or dye it a bright color,” she posted on Twitter, sending fans into a frenzy with suggestions over what the singer’s next look should be. Many artists find they lose their muse when they get clean, but MCR would suffer no such fate thanks to the classic crossover album they were about to unleash.
Fast forward to the video shoot for their single, Helena, and each of the guys got to keep their costumes. Naturally, for a band as theatrical as My Chemical Romance, this meant turning them into their stage clothes. Getting this look really hinges on two things - the suit, and the willingness to embrace how funky the suit actually is. For Gerard, there was one constant uniform - black jeans, a black t-shirt of some kind, cherry red Doc Martens, and a black leather jacket. This uniform was constant, to be fair, because the guys were all functionally homeless at the time, living in their van and touring basically non-stop. I have heard horror stories about the state of that leather jacket by the time it finally went the way of the Dodo, but I’ll spare you that nightmare.

The cropped, platinum blonde that Gerard sported was (apparently) an effort at making him look more "ill" for the role of The Patient in the life changing "Welcome to the Black Parade" music video. If you didn't know (why wouldn't you know), "The Black Parade" had a complete storyline to it, that followed The Patient coming to terms with his coming death. But for me, Gerard's haircut brought with it a whole new inversion of my personal standards of style. As previously I judged and abhorred anyone with short hair, dreaming constantly of finding a guy with straight ebony hair to sweep me off my feet — now I was opened up to a new... Aging can be a difficult reality for people to accept, which is why so many dye their gray hair when it starts coming in. Anyone who regularly colors their hair understands how much time and money goes into the constant upkeep, and the entire process can quickly become frustrating.
Near the end of, and just after the end of, the Black Parade touring cycle, Gerard adopted a uniform that has become known as his “Teacher Gerard” aesthetic among the band’s fans. It’s kind of easy to see why - black vest, white dress shirt, striped tie, black jeans...it’s all very academic looking. What sets it apart from something that you might see Jon wearing, for example, is the kind of haphazardness of it all. The collar, for example, has started to curl, and the tie knot is slightly lopsided and definitely a bit loose. The belt buckle is huge, which is definitely not the kind of thing you’d expect to see with a shirt and tie.
As a solo artist, Way performs with a live band to provide additional instrumentation and vocals. As I transitioned through so many adolescent stages and as I probably move through multitudes of twentysomething cliches, I feel like Gerard Way's constantly changing looks move right along with me. As a result, plenty of promos have hit the internet including the one below where she’s sporting her new red do.
Way was born in Summit, New Jersey, on April 9, 1977,[3] the son of Donna Lee (née Rush) and Donald Way. French prosecutors dismissed a different complaint, filed by French actress Hélène Darras, in January, citing the statute of limitations for the alleged crime, which Darras said occurred on the set of Fabien Onteniente’s film Disco in 2007. Multiple media sources, including Agence France-Presse (AFP) and BFM-TV, reported that the 75-year-old actor has been accused by two separate women of sexual assault. The alleged incidents reported occurred in 2021 — when Depardieu was shooting French film Les Violets vertes (The Green Shutters) — and in 2014 during the making of TV movie Le Magicien et les Siamois (The Magician and the Siamese).
With the odd recreational drink not suiting him, he decided to abstain completely. He was clean, sure, but he’d still ‘been there, man’; he understood the meaning of ‘lowest ebb’. When it comes to affordable ways to achieve this look, the only thing that you might have any difficulty finding is a jacket similar to Gerard’s, as the t-shirt, jeans, and Docs are all pretty relatively available. The closest I’ve been able to find is this example from Milwaukee Leather, which comes in at about $140. Gerard’s jacket’s primary standout features are those rounded lapels and the button front - everything else is generally pretty standard. Way co-created and wrote the comic mini-series The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and The Umbrella Academy,[1][2] the latter of which was later adapted into a Netflix series released in 2019.
Gerard and My Chemical Romance rose meteorically from the underground in 2005 when their Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge album catapulted them up the charts and into larger and larger venues on both sides of the Atlantic. But it wasn’t just the apocalyptic pop-punk anthems that appealed to the nations’ teenagers – it was the band’s frontman. It’s all geared towards making the musical volte-face less difficult than it could be. Although the sound system – cranked up to compete with the screaming crowd – renders some of the songs slightly shrill, the trickiest bit might be reaching an older crowd beyond the MCR fanbase.
In part two, we’re going to dive into Gerard’s post-MCR stylistic choices, including his life in the world of writing comic books for DC. Before then, though, I’ll leave you with this - my picks for the four best My Chemical Romance songs, one from each of their major studio albums (in order). It’s definitely more of a Halloween costume look than anything particularly wearable on a daily basis, but still a bit of fun to play around with regardless.
